International Day of the Girl Child: End Child Marriage, Invest in Girls’ Rights

Every October 11, the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child — a day the United Nations set aside in 2011 to draw attention to the challenges girls face and the rights they are owed. This year’s theme is “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.”

The theme this year

The 2026 theme, set through consultations with girls and girl-led organizations, calls on governments and communities to end child marriage and put real investment behind girls’ education, health, and protection. UNESCO’s message for the day puts it plainly: change is possible when communities, governments, and organizations invest in education, protection, and girls’ leadership.

The picture in our region

UNICEF reports that nearly 650 million women alive today were married before the age of 18, and about 12 million girls still marry before adulthood every year. West and Central Africa carries the heaviest burden in the world — 4 out of 10 girls marry before 18.

Here in Cameroon, UNICEF’s 2025 report on the situation of children finds that nearly 1 in 10 girls under 15 is married, and 24% of girls aged 15 to 19 have already begun their reproductive lives. Only 59% of girls are enrolled in secondary school.

What early marriage costs a girl

When a girl marries early, her schooling usually ends with it. Early pregnancy brings real health risks for a young mother and her baby — children born of early pregnancies start life more vulnerable, and their mothers face greater danger in childbirth. A girl who stays in school is a girl protected: education delays marriage, opens doors, and gives her the chance to make her own choices.

What each of us can do

Keep the girls in your family in school, even when money is tight. Speak up — gently but firmly — when an early marriage is being discussed in your family or community. Know that every girl has a right to grow up safe, educated, and free to choose her future.

At FADA Mission International, we believe every girl is fearfully and wonderfully made. By God’s grace, may every daughter in Cameroon have the chance to learn, to grow, and to choose her own future. 🙏
